Portugal work permit
Portugal residence and work permit
A work permit in Portugal is closely related to obtaining a work visa and a residence permit. An application for work visas to Portugal is filed before entering the country and only in the applicant’s country of residence. There are two main categories of work visas in Portugal that are issued to foreign specialists: Short-term work visa (Portugal Temporary Stay Visa) and Residence Visa with further obtaining a residence permit. Both categories allow their owners to work in the country, and both have restrictions on the time of stay. Work visas to Portugal are based on similar principles and have identical requirements: having a valid passport, travel insurance, etc.
The “Residence Permit” card in Portugal (Autorização de Residência) is required for anyone who is moving to permanent residence in Portugal, or for those who plan to stay for work or study for longer than three months.
Information about work permit
A work permit is a document that authorizes a foreigner to work legally in Portugal. The permit indicates the company that entrusts the execution of work to the foreigner and the position or the type of work which the foreigner is to perform. The work is therefore regarded as legal only if the foreigner performs the work identified in the permit. This means that if the foreigner wants to change jobs (i.e. change employer and / or position and / or industry) in which he is employed, he has to obtain a new permit. However, there are some circumstances in which the permit remains valid despite a change in the circumstances for which it has been issued.
